Upon its release in 2004, I immediately proclaimed The Incredibles to be my favourite Pixar film. Two decades on, that opinion has not changed. Subsequent viewings have only revealed further layers and incidental pleasures that I missed the first time. Writer-director Brad Bird’s superhero classic is a first-rate story crammed with fantastic action, shot through with wit, poignancy, and much hilarity. There’s also splendidly observed satire everything from participation trophy culture to petty corporate middle management, and the male mid-life crisis. If you haven’t seen it, I’d advise you to stop reading and do so immediately, as this retrospective will have no regard for spoilers.
