Following the Oscar nominations, there’s been a lot of chatter about Greta Gerwig being unfairly snubbed at the nominations stage for Barbie. My opinion on the nominations can be found here, but I didn’t touch on this particular subject and am being asked about it quite a bit, so thought it best to address the matter.

Really there are two questions: Firstly, was it unfair to leave out Greta Gerwig? This begs a second question: Should a Best Director nomination automatically follow a Best Picture nomination? Historically, that isn’t necessarily the case, but should it be? How can the Academy nominate a film for Best Picture and not recognise the director?
